A1, A2, B1, B2, C1… What does that mean*?

What can I do to move from one level to the next?

The two most important things you can do are:

  • Being active in class (be sure to participate in class discussions, ask lots of questions, and avoid using your native language).
  • Doing regular self-study (such as reading articles, watching videos and taking part in hobbies and activities in the language you're learning).

These factors also influence progess:

  • How intensive the course is.
  • The level itself: many people often plateau at B1-B2 level. In general, it takes longer to get to the next level as you go up the levels.
  • Your prior language learning experience. If you have learned other languages, you may make faster progress with additional languages.
  • Your mother tongue and how close it is to the language you are learning.
  • Amount of exposure to the language outside class.

How long will it take to move up a level?

With these factors in mind ,it takes around 80-150 hours of classes to complete A1. You will be able to communicate in a basic way in everyday situations with help from the listener, for example: buying things, reading menus and making appointments.

If you have completed A1, it takes around 120-180 hours of classes to complete A2. At the end of A2 will be able to communicate within a limited range of contexts, for example: asking for information and directions, sharing personal news, and talking about your job and interests.

If you have completed A2, it takes around 150-250 hours of classes to complete B1. At the end of B1, you will be able to communicate ideas in familiar contexts, for example: everyday conversations with friends and colleagues, telling simple anecdotes, and making plans and suggestions.

If you have completed B1, it takes between 150-300 hours of classes to complete B2. At the end of B2, you will be able to communicate effectively, with some fluency, in a range of contexts, for example: expressing your opinions clearly, understanding articles, taking part in meetings, and solving problems on the phone.

If you have completed B2, it takes between 200-300 hours of classes to complete C1. At the end of C1, you will be able to communicate fluently, flexibly and spontaneously in almost all contexts in your personal and professional life.
